GO BACK

The Pokemon Anime has been a huge part of my life since I was little, like many others. My dad pirated and burned the entire series (which was in sinnoh at the time) onto CDs for me to watch on my tv.

I watched the show pretty actively in english up until XY, where I got a little through the first season before losing interest (I did not like Serena LOL. I thought the main female character actively crushing for Ash was annoying at the time).

When the Sun/Moon anime released, I watched the first few episodes in english with a friend, and then out of my impatience for waiting for the dub, I continued it in Japanese. I don't remember where I left off in the SuMo anime, but it was decently far into the first season of it. Then my ADHD hit and I stopped for awhile. I have not seen any of the SWSH anime at the time of starting these reviews (January 2023).

Recently between 2021 to 2022, I decided I wanted to pick up the anime again, but from the start this time, both out of curiosity to see as much of the anime in it's original japanese as possible, but also to eventually see the parts of XY that I missed, and eventually, the modern anime. At the time I've posted this page, me and a different friend are about to start Johto Journeys. You all get to see our progress! You can presume that all of the english viewings were from my childhood, unless it's listed as being watched in exclusively english, in which case it means I probably couldn't find a subbed version and had to rewatch it again in english instead.

The sections are organized chronologically, going by [This List], which means movies and shorts will be listed in their respective locations in each season. If you want to search for specifically my movie or short reviews, you can always use "ctrl+f" to find them! Mini series like the PMD episodes, Origins, Twilight Wings, etc, will be listed as their own 'seasons' at the end of the list.

Credit to bulbapedia for the episode thumbnails, I considered taking my own screenshots to use for photos, but given the way me and my friend have been watching, I didn't want to have to interrupt our viewing for a screencap every single episode. Maybe one day I'll go through them again and take my own photos of my favorite bits from each episode to use! But for now, bulbapedia is very handy!
EP001 - Pokemon! I Choose You!
10/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled the exact same in japanese. It's such a perfect way for the show to start, a great way to have Ash and Pikachu start their friendship. There's not a lot I can say about this episode that hasn't already been said better and more eloquently by other pokemon fans. And of course; RIP Misty's bike, gone but not forgotten.
EP002 - Pokemon Emergency!
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Showdown! Pokemon Center!" in japanese. Team Rocket my beloved. My first time watching it in japanese it was so weird hearing James not voiced by Eric Stuart (Although it's weird hearing the first few episodes regardless of whether it's in English or Japanese, since even in english his first voice actor for Episodes 2-8 is Ted Lewis. But it was especially odd in Japanese). We also see Misty officially tag along afterwards.
I don't have much else to say about the episode itself really, so I'm going to use some of these really early reviews to get some other thoughts out. For one, most of Indigo League will have shorter or vague reviews. This is because it's been a little bit since me and my friend viewed the episodes by the time I started this page, and I didn't want to rewatch 80 episodes just to start this page. I still remember them, just not as well as the more recent ones. They should get better as I get further into the season and the episodes are fresher in my memory. If I ever do rewatch the first season, I'll add onto these reviews and remove this part of this one.
EP003 - Ash Catches a Pokemon
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "I Caught a Pokemon!" in japanese. We get to see Ash catch his first pokemon! Caterpie is so damn cute. He also promptly catches his second one, Pidgeotto, who I also love. And then right at the end we see Caterpie evolve already. Which honestly, makes sense given how fast most butterfly pokemon in the games evolve.
For my early addition here, let's talk about the Japanese outros! I wish we had more of these in the english dub, but I'm not gonna talk down the Pokerap, I loved when episodes started having the Pokerap. But as for the first intro that the beginning episodes have, it's "One Hundred Fifty-One". Which is an adorable outro of Pikachu bouncing a pokeball around to the song. It's honestly a perfect first outro for the series.
EP004 - Challenge of the Samurai
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Challenge of the Samurai Boy!" in japanese. What's not to love about the epic Harden battle. This is also the first episode, other than the VERY first episode, that gives us a taste of how far Ash is willing to go for the pokemon he cares about, heading into the home of a beedrill swarm just to rescue Metapod, who shortly afterwards evolves into the iconic Butterfree after saving him in return from a Beedrill.
EP005 - Showdown in Pewter City
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Nibi Gym Battle!" in japanese. Finally.....Brock.... I love this episode, the way they characterize Brock is great, how much his younger siblings care about him, and how Ash earns the gym badge but refuses because of it being through an accident, only for Brock to give it to him anyway because of the kindness he showed to his pokemon. Overall lovely. I think the fun fact that the dub makes Flint say that Brock's mom is dead is very funny, given she shows up later in a Pokemon Chronicles episode and some other episodes.
EP006 - Clefairy and the Moonstone
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Pippi and the Moon Stone" in japanese. Alright. That scientist Seymour?? Now hear me out-
That's all. I just like him jsdghjhsg.
EP007 - The Water Flowers of Cerulean City
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "The Suichũka of Hanada City" in japanese. Pikachu I'm sorry but you were so cringe for this one. I get it but still. That battle would have been OVER if Pikachu just went in for it. It's hilarious just seeing real ass fish in the aquarium though. I miss when pokemon would just have random real animals in there.
EP008 - The Path to the Pokemon League
5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "The Road to the Pokemon League" in japanese. This episode is a little weird to me. Not necessarily a bad episode but I always feel a bit conflicted about the whole cracking a whip at Pokemon, and then the 'it's fine, the pokemon want this too!' bit. Like, I mean it is often shown that Pokemon have plenty of personal autonomy, but it does feel weird still. I don't dislike the episode, the first half just feels strange.
EP009 - The School of Hard Knocks
5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Pokemon Victory Manual" in japanese. This is the first episode as far as i know where pokemon having 'levels' is mentioned explicitly in the anime. It isn't mentioned often, but it raises interesting questions when it does come up. How do people in the pokemon world here gauge a pokemon's level? Do they not know their exact levels and base it solely on what moves theyve been able to learn and if theyve evolved? But if that's the case, how does the girl know so fast that Pikachu isn't as high of a level as they 'should be'? It's very odd, and makes it understandable that levels are not brought up often in the first few seasons.
EP010 - Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Fushigidane of the Hidden Village" in japanese. The first of a back-to-back trio of episodes where Ash obtains the starter pokemon. Great episode, I love Bulbasaur's care for the little pokemon village. Also this is the episode where 'surprised pikachu' comes from, which is awesome.
EP011 - Charmander -- The Stray Pokemon
9/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Stray Pokemon - Hitokage" in japanese. Probably what I would consider the first episode that truly tries to be emotional, aside from EP001 of course. The tragic abandonment of Charmander, the fact that they will die if their flame goes out while we see how low it is already. Getting to see Charmander reject their former owner when he tries to reclaim his 'now stronger' pokemon after obviously having no intent to originally is very satisfying, and it's a great payoff with them deciding to go with Ash at the end. Definitely the strongest of the starter pokemon episodes.
EP012 - Here Comes The Squirtle Squad
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Enter the Zenigame Squad!" in japanese. Fun episode, I love the whole squirtle squad. I think it's very funny that they threaten to straight up execute Pikachu and Misty if Ash doesn't actually only get a super potion, which got mega softened into just 'dyeing Misty's hair' in the dub. Another thing that's really interesting is that the townspeople point guns at Ash, which was not removed in the english dub or even had censored dialogue. I find it interesting specifically because of the later episode, The Legend of Dratini, which was never aired in the US because of guns being pointed at Ash. TV censorship truly is a bizarre thing sometimes.
EP013 - Mystery at the Lighthouse
7.5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Masaki's Lighthouse" in japanese. Ash really did just try to fight a crab with a stick. And Team Rocket chasing off the giant dragonite is sooo frustrating to watch. Let Bill meet the giant dragonite!!!
EP014 - Electric Shock Showdown
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Electric Shock Showdown! Kuchiba Gym" in japanese. The start of Pikachu's refusal to evolve. I think it's very interesting to consider a world where this episode did result in Pikachu's evolution, do you think Pikachu would still be so prevalent as the series mascot? Would it have become Raichu instead? Of course that sort of plot line could only have ever ended in Pikachu's refusal, the show wouldn't have changed a major main character in such a drastic way. In the same way that Ash can never age, Pikachu can't either. But it's still an interesting 'What if'. Also Lt Surge straight up says "God Damn" during the battle, the fact that the Japanese version is much more okay with using light swears is definitely one of the more entertaining aspects.
EP015 - Battle Aboard the St. Anne
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Battle on the St. Annu!" in japanese. It surprises me how quick Ash is willing to trade butterfree in this episode. Of course it's worth keeping in mind that he IS 10, but it still feels strange. He does of course start wondering if it was the right choice afterward at least, and then clearly regrets his choice and manages to get Butterfree back. This episode is also is the start of what must be the world deciding Ash just NEEDS to die, as the ship begins to sink. His near death experiences only get more frequent honestly.
EP016 - Pokemon Shipwreck
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Pokemon Adrift" in japanese. As I mentioned on the last episode. I swear the world does not want Ash to live. Without Misty, I don't think anybody here would have survived. This is also the start of Team Rocket having a terrible track record with Gyarados, I don't know if theyre brave or stupid that they keep messing with magikarp and gyarados in the future. Probably stupid.
EP017 - Island of the Giant Pokemon
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Island of the Giant Pokemon!?" in japanese. I love this episode, getting to see the pokemon interact without trainers around is awesome, it's one of the few tastes of their personality we get to have beyond just behavior. It's also funny that Meowth and Bulbasaur are implied to have gotten drunk. Where did these little guys get alcohol from out there.
EP018 - Beauty and the Beach
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Holiday at Aopulco" in japanese. I think James deserves to have his boob scene. He looks great in a bikini. That is all.
EP019 - Tentacool & Tentacruel
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Menokurage Dokukurage" in japanese. I think the Tentacruel and Tentacool were in the right here honestly. I mean the show also agrees but like. I think they should have figured out which one was Obaba/Nastina's house and obliterated it. Her ship was not enough. Other than that though, this is I believe the first episode where another pokemon 'possesses' Meowth in some manner to speak through him, which I think is just, fascinating. I'm sure meowth is used to being a translator but I wonder what he thinks about random pokemon just grabbing him all the time and directly using his brain to speak.
EP020 - The Ghost of Maiden's Peak
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "The Ghost Pokemon and the Summer Festival" in japanese. I too would probably fall in love with that ghost tbh. Even after knowing it's a Ghastly. I have nothing else to add other than it's super funny Ghastly just turns into a straight up mongoose at one point too.
EP021 - Bye Bye Butterfree
9/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled the same in japanese. Loud sobbing noises. Goodbye Butterfree,,, You will be missed.
EP022 - Abra and the Psychic Showdown
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Casey! Psychic Showdown!" in japanese. I remember this episode scaring me as a kid. I was really afraid of the idea of being stuck in a dollhouse forever. Sabrina is awesome though, love me some creepy women
EP023 - The Tower of Terror
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Capture at the Pokemon Tower!" in japanese. I love whenever ghost pokemon show up in the anime, especially the Ghastly/Haunter/Gengar line. I love that a lot of ghost pokemon are basically just weird little pranksters often in the anime. Haunter is especially awesome. Also, related to how the world wants to kill Ash, he LITERALLY dies in this. Like dude he straight up got crushed by that chandelier. If it wasn't for the ghost pokemon agreeing to put him and pikachu's spirits back in their body, he would just be dead here. Insane.
EP024 - Haunter vs Kadabra
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Ghost VS Esper!" in japanese. Dude if Ash repeated the ways he's got a good chunk of his gym badges I bet other trainers would be so fucking annoyed. "What do you mean you beat Sabrina because your Haunter made a dumb face and she laughed"
EP025 - Primeape Goes Bananas
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Don't Get Angry, Okorizaru!" in japanese.
EP026 - Pokemon Scent-sation!
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Erika and Kusaihana" in japanese. Once again Ash does not get to actually beat the leader, and gets his badge from saving Gloom. I mean, fair. I would also just give someone the badge if they rescued my grass type from dying in a fire. But god damn Ash is just the king of getting badges without ever finishing a battle.
EP027 - Hypno's Naptime
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Sleeper and Pokemon Hypnotism!?" in japanese. Sorry Misty, that psyduck is your sun now.
EP028 - Pokemon Fashion Flash
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Rokon! Breeder Showdown!" in japanese. Team rocket's fashion sense is so terrible in this episode, it's exactly my thing, i love it. Also Meowth does one of his incredible 3 finger points where he tries to stick his finger out and it just looks like a dick. The outro song also changes again this episode, "Meowth's Song" is the new outro.
EP029 - The Punchy Pokemon
5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Fighting Pokemon! The Great Battle!" in japanese. Dude Pikachu just blew up Team Rocket
EP030 - Sparks Fly for Magnemite
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Do Coil Dream of Electric Mice!?" in japanese. That title is so much better honestly I wish they used it for the english one too. Ash catches a Muk and then immediatel makes it Oak's problem. Woe, Muk be upon ye.
EP031 - Dig Those Diglett!
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Lots of Digda!" in japanese. Diglett dig, Diglett dig, Trio Trio Trio.
EP032 - The Ninja Poke-Showdown
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Sekichiku Ninja Showdown!" in japanese. Ash finally wins another badge, legitmately this time. Of course at this point it's not a gym battle if he doesn't fail at first or get interrupted somehow, but he did it! Also, why does Bulbasaur know whirlwind. How fucking big is that thing's lung capacity?
EP033 - The Flame Pokemon-athon!
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "The Great Fire Pokemon Race!" in japanese. Ash becomes a horse girl episode.
EP034 - The Kangaskhan Kid
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Garura's Lullaby" in japanese.
EP035 - Legend of [Dratini]
7/10
(Watched in: Japanese)
Titled "The Legend of Miniryu" in japanese. There is no english title, but I translated Dratini's name for the above title. Like I said in the Squirtle Squad episode, I fidn it interesting how it was fine for guns to be pointed at Ash in that episode, but not here. It's likely because it's more noticeable and frequent, but it still feels kind of silly to me. Also, what was Ash thinking. Why did he catch ALL of the Tauros. You do not need that many fucking Tauros man what are you gonna do with 30 of them. Ash basically has his own bull army now.
EP036 - The Bridge Bike Gang
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Stormy Cycling Road" in japanese. I love that this episode just drops that Jessie and James were in a bike gang. Is that fact ever even brought up again? I don't think it ever is. It's so funny to me. I can imagine Jessie in a bike gang but James being in one is such a funny idea.
EP037 - Ditto's Mysterious Mansion
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Metamon and the Copycat Girl" in japanese. This episode cursed ditto forever. For merch purposes i understand why they do the ditto face for ditto pokemon. But other than merch, this episode made everybody think that ditto always has the weird face when it transforms for a good while. It's not as common now, but it was for awhile and it was a personal pet peeve. Her ditto was just having a hard time doing the faces!
EP038 - Electric Soldier Porygon
8/10
(Watched in: Japanese)
AKA "Computer Warrior Porygon", but more widely known as Electric Soldier Porygon. Pikachu really fucked it up here honestly gdi. I wish the solution had just been more guidelines on flashing, fixing the flashing speed in the episode to be safer, you know, normal stuff. Now sadly Porygon is not allowed in the anime anymore. I do wish that they could have just fixed the flashing to not be dangerous, but I understand that's not always financially viable, and it wasnt a plot relevant episode. I don't know why porygon needed banned though, just....Don't do the flashing again. Other than the seizure scene, the episode isn't too bad, I think it's a really interesting concept. This episode has the next outro as well, which is "Fantasy in my Pocket", I couldn't find a proper video of this one, so the video is just a static image from it. But you can still hear the song.
Holiday Hi-Jynx
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Rougela's Christmas" in japanese. Merry Chrisler! Thanks to Porygon shenanigans, the airing of this episode and Snow Way out was delayed and aired later in the series instead of here, where they should have been chronologically. They basically became special episodes because of that.
Snow Way Out!
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Iwark as a Bivouac" in japanese. I used to think about Jessie's snow eating for ages. I also liked to eat snow as a kid as many kids do i think. James and Meowth are cringe for not wanting to eat the snow. It's not like it was dirty snow, you'll probably be fine. Also again Ash has another near death experience, this time almost freezing to death!
EP039 - Pikachu's Goodbye
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Forest of Pikachu" in japanese. This episode aired alongside the next one as a one hour special. Fitting, given the next episode is Eevee themed who would eventually become basically the second mascot. I love this episode as a whole, but it's especially funny that because of pichu not existing yet, theres just, little baby pikachu. It still makes sense given most baby pokemon have special means of breeding them (that the anime usually ignores though) but little tiny pikachu... god bless.
EP040 - The Battling Eevee Brothers
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "The Four Eievui Brothers" in japanese. ouuughhh.... eevee.... vaporeon.....jolteon......flareon.... I have nothing to add I just love them. To make this longer though I'll include the dumbest eevee related fact of my childhood. I was so determined to always pretend i was a vaporeon whenever i was in a pool as a kid. My mom kept trying to teach me how to swim properly (she used to do swim for a sport and had medals and everything) and she just, couldnt get it in my head. And then suddenly I was swimming right, and she was like "oh!! youre doing it!!!" But. It was not because of her. It was because I was trying to be vaporeon and i happened to get it right. I mean hey, if it works it works.
EP041 - Wake Up Snorlax!
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Wake Up! Kabigon!" in japanese. I don't know what team rocket was thinking trying to lift snorlax with the hot air balloon. But to fair that thing has carried some impressive weight so maybe theyre not insane.
EP042 - Showdown at Dark City
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Showdown! Pokemon Gym!" in japanese. Pikachu Love Ketchup Bottle.......
EP043 - March of the Exeggutor Squad
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "The Great Nassy Squad March!" in japanese. The exeggcute hypnotising Ash like that is fascinating. Fucked up fr. It's a miracle the bad guy teams aren't just using more of them to make people do shit.
EP044 - The Problem with Paras
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Paras and Parasect" in japanese. I love that pathetic little Paras. Gets hit with a little splash of water and just falls over ajhgfjhdgjh.
EP045 - The Song of Jigglypuff
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Sing! Purin!" in japanese. My cringe little baby Jigglypuff.... I must admit their singing is far better in english, maybe it's just nostalgia bias but idk, theres lots of other things in the anime that i've thought were even better in the original japanese, but "purin" doesn't have quite the same nice tune that jigglypuff does. I think the extra syllables help. I also love the aesthetic of the city they're in, it's great.
EP046 - Attack of the Prehistoric Pokemon
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Resurrection!? Fossil Pokemon!" in japanese. Fossil pokemon are always really funny to see in the anime. Imagine if you were just doing some cave/underground related job and suddenly theres a straight up dinosaur in there. Also, we finally get Charizard and Togepi's egg in this episode too.
EP047 - A Chansey Operation
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Lucky's Clinical Records" in japanese. This episode is just one insane thing after another. Pikachu swallowing an apple whole (real hamster behavior), the doctor just being like "yeah you literal children should help me with medical procedures", Ash advocating for Team Rocket's pokemon to basically die, and then the doctor stabbing himself with anesthetic and just falling over.
EP048 - Holy Matrimony!
9/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Gardie and Kojirō" in japanese. Yessss Team Rocket episode..... James my beloved 💖 I don't even have anything else to add I just love James any episode focused around him or Meowth for the majority of it is great to me.
EP049 - So Near, Yet So Farfetch'd
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Kamonegi's Sitting Duck" in japanese. Little bastard thief boy and his cringe duck.
EP050 - Who Gets to Keep Togepi?
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Who Gets to Keep Togepy!?" in japanese. It's a good thing you can't give an egg shaken baby syndrome with how much it got thrown around this episode. Congrats on your gay little baby Misty
EP051 - Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Fushigidane's Mysterious Flower Garden" in japanese. I think this is the first time we see a pokemon refuse to evolve out of sheer will. Pikachu refused the thunder stone before, but Bulbasaur isn't a stone evolve. Also Pikachu finally does an imitation for the first time, I love Pikachu's silly pokemon imitations.
EP052 - Princess vs Princess
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Fierce Fight! Pokemon Girls' Festival" in japanese. Definitely an episode that feels far more interesting in it's original japanese. The amount of 'dub edits' listed on Bulbapedia for this episode is crazy. The plot doesn't change much between versions, but given the episode is entirely based around a japanese holiday, it makes much more sense in japanese.
EP053 - The Purr-fect Hero
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "It's Children's Day! Everyone Gather!" in japanese. Similarly to the last episode, this one is also based on a japanese holiday, though given the focus on Meowth and the simplicity of the idea of 'kids day' it makes more sense still when dubbed. Still lots of dub edits though!
EP054 - The Case of the K-9 Caper!
5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Police Dog Gardie" in japanese. Hmmmmm...Puppy..... Also a new outro again, "Pokemon Ondo"
EP055 - Pokemon Paparazzi
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Photo Op Pikachu" in japanese. Forever hilarious that Todd got a photo of Ash being carried away by Aerodactyl
EP056 - The Ultimate Test
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Pokemon Certification Test!?" in japanese.
EP057 - The Breeding Center Secret
7.5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "The Secret of the Breeding Center!" in japanese. Butch and Cassidy make their first appearance! I wish they had more appearances in the anime, but understandbly this is not a show about team rocket and having 2 team rocket duos doing stuff all the time would just be chaotic. Although, that just makes me want to see a Team Rocket spinoff show honestly.
EP058 - Riddle Me This
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Burn! Guren Gym!" in japanese. Hoo hoo hee hee! If you want to beat my gym you must answer my riddles three! - Definitely something Blaine said.
EP059 - Volcanic Panic
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Decisive Battle! Guren Gym!" in japanese. After defeating mr riddle man, Ash finally gets his 7th badge. You're so close!
EP060 - Beach Blank-Out Blastoise
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Kamex's Island" in japanese. How did Jigglypuff even get stuck in there. What was it doing. I can't imagine they just happened to get stuck entirely by accident, why did they go in there. Why did they immediately start singing when they got stuck in there. If I was jigglypuff i wouldve just started screaming instead.
EP061 - The Misty Mermaid
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Hanada Gym! Underwater Battle!" in japanese. I think team rocket needs to just give up crime and become actors or something at this point honestly.
EP062 - Clefairy Tales
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Pippi VS Purin" in japanese. Moooooom the kanto fairies are fighting!!! Also James and jessie in the alien outfits is so funny looking.
EP063 - The Battle Of The Badge
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Tokiwa Gym! The Last Badge!" in japanese. Mewtwo hype lets goooo. Also Ash got so lucky that team rocket was left in carge of the gym. NO shot he wouldve got that badge otherwise.
EP064 - It's Mr Mime Time
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Barrierd from the Pokemon Circus" in japanese. I wish i had a little malewife energy Mr Mime that would hang out with me.
EP065 - Showdown at the Po-ke Corral
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Rival Showdown! Okido Laboratory" in japanese. Just like I said, Ash's Tauros are basically a small army. Team Rocket didnt stand a chance. Also its fun having a prominent Gary appearance, seeing the differences between him and Ash is cool, I love seeing all the characterization in the show. The outro also's gone back to Meowth's Song for the next few episodes.
EP066 - The Evolution Solution
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "When Yadon Becomes Yadoran" in japanese.I feel slowpoke on a spiritual level.
EP067 - The Pi-Kahuna
9/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "The Legend of the Surfing Pikachu" in japanese. The wave's name in japanese is so much funnier for no good reason. "Big Tuesday" just feels so much more nonsensical even though it's a direct reference to an american movie. Like come on ohhh man here come the big wave, "Big Tuesday" lmao.
Pikachu Short 1 - Pikachu's Vacation
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Pikachu's Summer Vacation" in japanese. I don't have a whole lot to say, all the Pikachu shorts are super cute and fun but dont have a lot to comment on usually. But it is still neat to see all the gen 2 pokemon that get revealed in these shorts and movies! I love seeing their early appearances before the games are even out. Also poor Meowth always gets screwed over somehow in these ajhgjhdgjf.
Movie Short - The Uncut Story of Mewtwo's Origin
8/10
(Watched in: Japanese)
Titled "The Birth of Mewtwo" in japanese. I don't think I ever saw this as a kid, but I really like what it adds to Mewtwo's character.
Movie 01 - Mewtwo Strikes Back
10/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Mewtwo's Counterattack" in japanese. The first movie is obviously such a classic, and everything about it also fueled every kid on early youtube that made AMVs to create them for this movie, and to make their own evil pokemon ocs. Edgy mewtwo and the cloning machines. I don't wanna live in a world without all the weird kids making pokemon amvs, i wish i had been old enough to make them back then instead of just watching.
EP068 - Make Room for Gloom
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Kusaihana of the Botanical Garden" in japanese. Team Rocket get solar beamed xd
EP069 - Lights, Camera, Quack-tion
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Pokemon the Movie!" in japanese. Pokemon acting in the show is very entertaining to me, i think it would be extremely funny if the Pokemon world had Air Bud. This episode is when the outro changes to "Type: Wild", which I wasn't super fond of at first when I heard it, but it seriously grew on me after it became the outro that would play for almost the entirety of orange islands.
EP070 - Go West Young Meowth
10/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Nyarth's A-I-U-E-O" in japanese. I fucking love this episode. I think most people do honestly. It's very simple in it's story, but it works like that. As i've mentioned plenty of times, I love Team Rocket and especially James and Meowth, so I'm so glad that Meowth got a good backstory and so early into the show too, especially since Jessie doesn't really get a full episode to herself for awhile and mostly just anecdotes, the same could have easily happened to Meowth.
EP071 - To Master the Onixpected!
5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Enter Siba of The Big Four!" in japanese. Imagine being that sandslash. How did it not get crushed while stuck between Onix's rocks. That thing is massive idc how tough your spines are
Pikachu Short 2 - Christmas Night
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Let's Play on Christmas!" in japanese. Look at those little guys go
Pikachu Short 3 - Kanga Games
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Let's Play in the Snow!" in japanese. It's very cute, I don't have much else to add here djhdhj
EP072 - The Ancient Puzzle of Pokemopolis
7.5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Fierce Battle! Ancient Pokemon" in japanese. This is one of those episodes that I always felt came way later in the series for some reason. I'm not entirely sure why but I always think it's a late Johto episode instead of a late Kanto one. Really strange.
EP073 - Bad To The Bone
5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Garagara's Bone Club" in japanese. Once again pokemon forgetting that electric moves don't work on ground types. How tf did pikachu knock out that Marowak, come on man.
EP074 - All Fired Up!
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Fire! Pokemon League Opening Ceremony!" in japanese. I haven't seen this episode in the dub for a good while, so I don't remember if the full theme song was actually played in it, but I remember as a kid i would always envision scenes from this episode whenever i listened to the full version of the english indigo league theme.
EP075 - Round One - Begin!
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Pokemon League Opens! Water Field!" in japanese. Krabby/Kingler was really the GOAT in this battle.
EP076 - Fire and Ice
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Ice Field! Blazing Battle!" in japanese. Fire and Ice??? Like the warrior cat book-- (I am taken out back and killed)
EP077 - The Fourth Round Rumble
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Grass Field! Unexpected Rival!" in japanese. I find it interesting that they chose to have Gary be eliminated before Ash could battle him. You'd kind of expect that they'd get to have a battle but, nah.
EP078 - A Friend In Deed
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "A Rival Enters!" in japanese. I love the little tuft of hair that Ritchie's pikachu Sparky has. 10/10 Pikachu design it's simple but perfect
EP079 - Friend and Foe Alike
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Sekiei Stadium! VS Hiroshi!" in japanese. Tragic that Ash loses the battle, especially in such an absolutely silly way (damn you charizard) but it at least happened in a fun way, and he did make top 16! It's understandable for the early series, he's still a beginner. Later in the series though his constant losses get a bit silly ajhgfhdgj.
EP080 - Friends to the End
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Pokemon League! Final Battle!" in japanese. It's a shame we don't get to Ritchie pretty much ever again after this episode, other than me spoiling myself by accident and finding out he shows up in Journeys. But still, that's a huge gap. Still, great end for the indigo league!
EP081 - Pallet Party Panic
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Masara Town! Setting Off on a New Journey!" in japanese. Definitely one of Team Rocket's more insane moments to just straight up bomb a 10 year old's party! One of my favorite fun facts is how in english Oak initially calls Professor Ivy 'he' and then Misty calls her a woman. (Not sure if it was in the japanese version too, I missed the line and I don't feel like going to check right now.) It's obviously just an error but I'm gonna say genderfluid Ivy hype yahoo!
EP082 - A Scare in the Air
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Blimp Accident!?" in japanese. Honestly considering the state of the blimp I'm impressed how well they were able to pilot that thing.
EP083 - Poke Ball Peril
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Southern Pokemon and the GS Ball" in japanese. Goodbye Brock....God am I glad you'll be back in Johto later. I understand though, I would also love to be around Professor Ivy.
EP084 - The Lost Lapras
7.5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Save Laplace!" in japanese. I don't have a lot of words for this one but i do love this episode. It's very sweet and I love Lapras
EP085 - Fit To Be Tide
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Orange League! Natsukan Gym!" in japanese. I like that the Orange Island gyms are sort of like an early version of the Alola trials and Paldea Gym Challenges. It's neat!
EP086 - Pikachu Re-Volts
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "The Mystery of the Missing Pokemon!" in japanese. Another Butch and Cassidy episode, love seeing them! Not a whole lot to note though other than I remember this episode being the fuel for so many edgy pikachu amvs.
EP087 - The Crystal Onix
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "The Crystal Iwark" in japanese. It is a fucking crime that theres never been any Crystal Onix obtainable in the games.
EP088 - In The Pink
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "The Island of Pink Pokemon" in japanese. It's also criminal that no pokemon game has ever used pink pokemon for a gimmick. No special events or anything. Unfair!!!
EP089 - Shell Shock!
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "The Secret of the Kabuto Fossils!" in japanese. Imagine seeing a fucking entire island suddenly turn into extinct trilobites. Fucked up man.
EP090 - Stage Fight!
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Dance! Pokemon Showboat!" in japanese. I love that shy little Raichu god bless them!
EP091 - Bye Bye Psyduck
5.5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Goodbye Koduck! Come again Golduck?" in japanese. That Golduck is so fucking funny. Just shows up and wins a battle for Misty then fucks off again.
EP092 - The Joy of Pokemon
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Sailing Joy! Cross the Raging Waves!" in japanese. I have no notes on this episode other than when Magikarp evolves into Gyarados at the end it straight up makes cat noises. Like it actually meows. 10/10 best interpretation of gyarados.
EP093 - Navel Maneuvers
5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Navel Gym! Snowy Mountain Battle!" in japanese. I'm gonna be honest. I know I watched this because I remember having an immature giggle at "navel" over 'ha. navel like bellybutton' but I don't remember literally anything about the episode itself. I think I zoned out by accident. I'll have to rewatch it again at some point and update this
EP094 - Snack Attack
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Gluttonous Kabigon! Huge Panic!" in japanese. I understand why in other languages they choose to say "Grapefruit" instead of "Pomelo", since theyre very similar and Grapefruits are more well known. But considering the friend I watched this with uses "Pawmelo" as a nickname, the usage of pomelo in the original japanese is much funnier. I also love the usage of Jigglypuff in this episode and Ash's pure determination to not sleep so he can catch Snorlax.
EP095 - A Shipful of Shivers
6.5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Ghost Ship and Ghost Pokemon!" in japanese. Typical 'fetch item from team rocket' type episode, but we get some Meowth possession, thats always fun.
EP096 - Meowth Rules!
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Lord Nyarth's Island!?" in japanese. I'm so biased toward Team Rocket, Meowth, and cats in general. And this story is basically all of those things, it's great. Catgirls and Catboys, Meowth focused episode, Team Rocket bonding. What more could I ask for?
EP097 - Tracey Gets Bugged
7.5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "The Strike Soldier's Pride" in japanese. Not a whole lot to add here but it's a great episode, I like our new grumpy grandpa scyther.
EP098 - A Way Off Day Off
5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "It's a Southern Island! Everyone Assemble!" in japanese. A nice filler episode. Nothing really happens, mostly pokemon bonding to accomodate for Tracey's Scyther's introduction. It's a nice episode but there's not much to say.
EP099 - The Mandarin Island Miss Match
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Kanna of The Big Four! Ice Battle!!" in japanese. Prima/Lorelei (Kanna in japanese) is great, love the kind of energy she brings. Yes girl be super vague and mysterious!
EP100 - Wherefore Art Thou, Pokemon?
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Nidoran's Love Story" in japanese. A very cute 100th episode (though technically 102nd if you count the unnumbered winter episodes in Indigo League), I love nidoran a lot whenever they appear in the anime, their weird little rabbit vibes are so cute and the two of them are adorable together.
EP101 - Get Along, Little Pokemon
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Coil on the Prairie!" in japanese. I love that weird little magnemite that gets to evolve into magneton. Little bendy boy. Also eeveelution appearance hype!!!!
EP102 - The Mystery Menace
5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Monster in the Sewers!?" in japanese.
Yeah fuck that mayor. Get his ass.
EP103 - Misty Meets Her Match
4/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Yuzu Gym! Type Battle 3 VS 3!!" in japanese. I don't know, I didn't care for this episode. I don't really like any romance plots with the main cast. I think romance gags are funny (Like Brock or people mistaking Misty and Ash for a couple) but any episodes that try to have a 'serious' romance just feel forced ajhgdfjhfgj. I know this contradicts a bit with my thoughts on "Wherefore Art Thou, Pokemon?", but its different when it's the pokemon. I didn't care about those Nidoran's trainers, I just thought the Nidoran were cute
EP104 - Bound For Trouble
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Pikachu VS Nyarth!?" in japanese. Once again I am a sucker for Meowth episodes, and the 'enemies being stuck together' trope is always great to watch when done well. Getting a better look at how Meowth and Pikachu interact when nobody else is around is great. I'm not really a Pikachu and Meowth shipper, but episodes like these definitely make me understand why others like it!
Pikachu Short 4 - Pikachu's Rescue Adventure
6/10
(Watched in: English)
Very cute! Super simple like many of the shorts, nothing particularly iconic, but a very fun watch.
Movie 02 - Pokemon the Movie 2000 - The Power of One
7.5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
I don't have a whole lot to say about this movie, I really enjoyed it like many of the early movies, but this one in particular never really stuck with me much beyond just, knowing what happens in it. I do think it's very entertaining how much the villain feels sort of like a proto-Ghetsis however, as pointed out by my friend. The greenish hair and the almost castle-esque floating ship, not to mention the art on the ceiling of said ship. It would not be surprising if he was a mild inspiration later on, whether conciously or unconciously.
EP105 - Charizard Chills
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Lizardon! I Choose You!!" in japanese. At long last, Charizard development! After being disobedient as all get out for ages, Charizard finally gets his ass beat and creates the opportunity for them and Ash to bond again. I always love episodes that showcase how much Ash cares about his pokemon. His dedication to even his most difficult pokemon is heartwarming. This is also the episode where they stop using Type:Wild for the japanese credits, which is sad tbh! The new song isn't bad, but i got really attached to Type: Wild, which is funny since I didnt really care for it at first and now I'm devastated it's gone.
EP106 - The Pokemon Water War
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Firefighting Showdown! Zenigame VS Kameil" in japanese. Super fun! I always love when the show makes callbacks to older episodes involving the pokemon's backstories. Me and my friend both agree there was a real missed opportunity for Squirtle to evolve in this episode, it would have been neat i think for Ash to have a pokemon of each evolutionary stage. But oh well! I still love Squirtle just as they are!
EP107 - Pokemon Food Fight
6.5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Burn! Kabigon!!" in japanese. Honestly I don't remember much of what happened in this episode despite having only watched this a day or two ago. I think that insane apple costume Ash puts on took up half my brain. The positioning of his arms above his head like that is so fucking funny to me.
EP108 - Pokemon Double Trouble
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Tag Battle! The Final Gym!!" in japanese, Ash finally gets the final Orange League badge in this episode from Ruriko (Luana in english), who's design I really like. It's also always fun to see a double battle in the anime! I like seeing the creativity in the way moves are choreographed. It's especially fun to see how Charizard and Pikachu don't start off great but then become a better team mid-battle. Lots of Charizard development in the recent episodes after being disobedient for so long.
EP109 - The Wacky Watcher!
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Koiking! The Secret of Evolution!!" in japanese. Always great to see Tracey have some episodes more focused around him. He may not be my favorite party member compared to others, but it's still very fun to see him get all excited and hyped up. Also I mean, I agree, Pokemon research and thinking about their biology/behaviors is pretty epic
EP110 - The Stun Spore Detour
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Nyoromo and Kasumi" in japanese. I really enjoy how Pikachu's first thought when Ash and Tracey are poisoned is to attempt blasting them with electricity. thank God Misty is actually sane. Jessie still having the energy to kick James while also poisoned is hilarious. And of course James once again looks great crossdressing.
EP111 - Hello, Pummelo!
6/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Winner's Cup! Full Battle 6 VS 6!!" in japanese. The beginning of the Orange League! I'm impressed with Ash's battling ability in this one. Actually considering types and all. Of course we know he'll lose, he won't win a championship for another 20 or so years. But it's still fun to see him actually trying really hard!
EP112 - Enter The Dragonite
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Final Battle! Enter Kairyu!!" in japanese. Ash was absolutely flooring this guy until Dragonite, and he still managed to win. I honestly forgot that he won this. It doesn't really count given it's not a real championship, but still! Good job my favorite little weirdo.
EP113 - Viva Las Lapras
7.5/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Goodbye Laplace!" in japanese. Very sad to see Lapras go!!! But it's very sweet to see them back with their family after this whole arc. Also we got to see Team Rockets bones crunch which is pretty funny
EP114 - The Underground Round Up
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Big Marumine Explosion!?" in japanese. Dude a fucking infestation of Electrode would genuinely be a nightmare. Imagine living in that town and watching them slowly grow in numbers. I would shit myself
EP115 - A Tent Situation
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Back in Masara Town!" in japanese. Gotta say the most notable part of this episode is that incredible invention name Meowth said. Only a true naming genius could come up with "the automatic-rope-square-knot-improved-with-butterfly-rope, mark 1"
EP116 - A Rivalry Revival
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Rival Showdown! Satoshi VS Shigeru!!" in japanese. Dude Team Rocket straight up just broke into Ash's house that is fucking insane. They're eating dinner bro!!! Other than that though, great end to the Orange Islands. I love Gary's eevee.
EP117 - Don't Touch That 'dile
6/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Wakaba Town! The Town Where Winds Telling of a Beginning Blow!" in japanese.
"I should've known it was you guys!" Ash you should have guessed that it was Team Rocket who stole the totodile when the footprints were a normal shoe, a high heel, and a fucking cat foot. Did you think it was just another criminal group that coincidentally also had a cat.
EP118 - The Double Trouble Header
6/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "The Rookie's Chicorita!" in japanese. Ash you're fucked up for sending Charizard out against Casey knowing she's such a beginner. Actually evil. Real "sending my level 100 starter out against a toddler in game" energy.
EP119 - A Sappy Ending
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Fierce Battle! Heracros VS Kailios!!" in japanese. I forgot how fucking insane some of the things Meowth says in the English dub. "Suck bucket" was not a phrase I expected to hear
EP120 - Roll On, Pokemon!
5/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "The Valley of Donfan!" in japanese. I have no funny comments for this one tbh. Donphan moment. nothing really happened. Team Rocket has horrible luck
EP121 - Illusion Confusion!
6/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Hoho and the Mysterious Forest!" in japanese. Look at that weird little guy go. Fascinating. Also why did Meowth feel the need to put on swim trunks in the beach illusion.
EP122 - Flower Power
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Kireihana's Battle Dancing!" in japanese. God really did not want me and my friend to watch Pokemon today. Something has happened to them during this episode and the last 2 episodes. but we trek onward..... There was so many silly puns in this episode in particular.
EP123 - Spinirak Attack
6/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Itomaru! The Great Investigation!!" in japanese. Stop making James sacrifice his bottlecaps!!!! James!!! Kill her ass!!! I would be so mad if I had to keep throwing away my collections constantly asjbrhdbsvsga
EP124 - Snubbull Snobbery
8/10
(Watched in: English)
They misspelled Snubull in the title card!! Also ma'am your chef is definitely not french that accent was awful. Also this is definitely one of Team Rockets funnier episodes. Their back and forth was incredible
EP125 - The Little Big Horn
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Odoshishi! Forest of Illusions!?" in japanese. After witnessing Brock basically do a cat face and lick his "paw" I think it's no wonder I was such an insane kid and continued to stay crazy. I was being encouraged by Pokemon. Also that baby stantler is so cute.
EP126 - The Chikorita Rescue
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "The Stubborn Chicorita!!" in japanese. Ash you deserved that flamethrower to the head when you sent out Charizard against a little chikorita. like yeah Charizard got it's ass pretty beat but you didn't know that would happen. Realistically that Chikorita would have been OBLITERATED. Anyway congrats Ash on your little beastie that loves you
Pikachu Short 5 - Winter Games
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Let's Play on the Ice!" in japanese. Chikorita attempts murder let's go!!
Pikachu Short 6 - Stantler's Little Helpers
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Christmas Night" in japanese. Do you think Jesus exists in Pokemon. Do you think he was a pokemon
EP127 - Once in a Blue Moon
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Nuoh and the GS Ball!?" in japanese. Ash doesn't need MORE luck man he's already met multiple legendaries. literally 3 out of the first 4 Johto Pokemon he met are legendaries (Ho-oh, Lugia, and Suicune. Togepi being the non legend)
EP128 - The Whistle Stop
10/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Rediba's Flute!" in japanese. this episode is a 10 purely for that insane backwards audio bit that the dub has holy shit. it took me and my friend so off guard
Short - Slowking's Day
5/10
(Watched in: Japanese)
Titled "Yadoking's Day" in japanese. He fucking slammed that coconut against his head damn
EP129 - Ignorance is Blissey
9/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Happinas the Happy Nurse!" in Japanese. Bimbo Blissey energies. Also I love that Jessie went to a Chansey school. Imagine the universe where she actually succeeded there somehow. Her and Blisseys friendship is epic
EP130 - A Bout With Sprout
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Big Crisis! Madatsubomi Tower!" in japanese. Ash I know that Charizard listens to you now but I would not be releasing him around a bunch of small children, you are crazy. Also what the hell was Team Rockets plan here. Was the building just meant to be a threat while they take Pikachu? why are they attaching a rocket to the beam. What were they cooking
EP131 - Fighting Flyer with Fire
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Kikyō Gym! Sky Battle!!" in japanese. Ash you need to stop trusting every redhead and purple haired duo you come across. when you can see their hair colors there is no reason you should be falling for this everytime. at least when they have wigs on there's some excuse. Also if this episode was released a few years later in the later 2000s I feel like people would be all over Falkner. maybe they were and I just wasn't around to see it.
EP132 - For Crying Out Loud
6/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Crybaby Maril!" in japanese. "That cliff will be the perfect place for our first meeting!" "Yeah that way after she meets you she can jump off it" JESUS MISTY CHILL. Also the one time a girl actually likes Brock back and she leaves forever. RIP my man Brock
EP133 - Tanks a Lot!
7/10

EP134 - Charizard's Burning Ambitions
9/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "The Valley of Lizardon! Until We Meet Again!!" in japanese. "It sounded like some kind of sound" real insightful James thank you! Also Ash god damn you didn't have to add "who wants a weak Charizard", good thing your Pokemon can read right through you but still.
EP135 - Grin to Win!
9/10

Titled "Big Panic! Kimawari Contest!!" in japanese. there is a LOT of great quotes in this one it's just one thing after another. Also I'm starting to think Brock and James need to go on my kinlist at this rate
EP136 - Chikorita's Big Upset
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Chicorita is in a Bad Mood!?" in japanese. "You mean there's a new Pokemon called Therapy????" "No Ash therapy is something to help solve your problems" "Oh. Is that all?" paraphrasing Misty's dialogue because I didn't want to rewind in the middle to see the exact phrasing but this is probably the best quote in the entire Johto series so far no joke
EP137 - Foul Weather Friends
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Hanecco Hopped! Battle on the Prairie!!" in japanese. Meowth canonical tax fraudster let's go!!!!!! Or at least tax fraud enthusiast

EP145 - A Farfetch'd Tale
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Ubame Forest! Search for Kamonegi!!" in japanese. Farfetchd is an inherently funny Pokemon for no good reason other than being a weird duck
EP146 - Tricks of the Trade
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Sonans and the Pokemon Swap Meet!!" in japanese. In the sea of English episodes, we have reached the part where scattered subbed episodes are reappearing. And man I'm glad it's this one, finding out about Wobuffett's name being a constant pun in the anime is very funny. No wonder Jessie gets so mad at the thing, it's just constantly saying "that's right!" to what they say
EP147 - The Fire-ing Squad!
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Burn, Zenigame Squad! Like a Fire!!" in japanese. What a reunion episode! Psyduck definitely has 2nd degree burns from getting chucked into a fire but you know, he'll be fine.

Titled "Lots of Upah!" in japanese. Strong little mischievous bastard of a Wooper! Slippery little thing!
EP149 - Tunnel Vision
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Purin VS Bulu!" in japanese. Team Rocket at this point is basically a kid friendly version of the Always Sunny Gang. You are all so terrible to eachother but also inseparable.
EP150 - Hour of the Houndour
7.5/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Dark Pokemon - Delvil" in japanese. Epic evil pubby moments. Love attack. I'm also surprised at the depiction of the injured Houndour, I kind of forgot about this episode and the poor hurt Houndours sounds were really basically just a straight up dying dog. like it didn't last super long but I forgot how brutal the early seasons are sometimes
EP151 - The Totodile Duel
8/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Who Gets to Keep Waninoko!? Satoshi VS Kasumi!" in japanese. Misty was literally like "You wouldn't hit a BABY would you?" just to try and get that totodile. Dirtiest play ever.

Movie 03 - Spell of the Unown: Entei
10/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Emperor of the Crystal/Unknown Tower: Entei" in japanese. We tried to watch this in japanese at first, but then the subtitles turned out to be just the english subtitles slapped on japanese audio, and not a real translation (cringe!). But otherwise, I really love how you can tell they wanted to show off as much 3D as they could. And it honestly works really well. as the cgi ages with the passage of time it only adds further to the weird feeling of the Unown. They look bizarre and out of place, and it works really well. Out of all the movies besides the first one, this is probably the one that's most memorable to me. The visuals, story, and characters in this are all fantastic.
EP156 - The Psychic Sidekicks!
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Kirinriki! The Village of Esper Pokemon!" in japanese. I love early Pokemon where the RBGY games fucked up and psychic was strong against ghost when it was supposed to be the other way around. the Gen 1 anime had the correct type advantage. Now when it was fixed in gen 2 though, the Gen 2 anime says that psychic is strong against ghost instead of the correct advantage of ghost over psychic. As said by my friend "They managed to be wrong both times by being correct"

Titled "Miltank! Revenge Battle!!" in japanese. For some reason this episode was just missing on the site weve been using. So I went to go watch the episode on my dad's Plex server. well. it turned out the Plex episode was in Japanese but without subs. And also EXTREMELY DATAMOSHED. Could we have just found another anime site? yes. Did we? no. we decided to just read the Bulbapedia plot write up and then watch this in the completely broken no subtitles version. Fascinating and hilarious experience.

7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Blacky! Battle During a Dark Night!!" in japanese. Dude I'm so glad for that random British kid who got to voice the trainer Gary battled in the beginning like I would be so happy to be voicing a pokemon character thanks to a competition. but also, hearing the most blatantly British sounding child as the first line in an episode knocked the wind out of me AHDHDHDH
EP172 - Mountain Time
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Redian! Pass Through the Valley of the Wind!!" in japanese. Team Rocket really has like. Genie-Type luck. They will never die or get seriously Injured, but they will always end up in the worst situation possible.

9/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Mewtwo! I Am Here" in japanese. Very interesting how this is Traditionally animated but digitally colored. I really like Domino both in design and her real personality (the fake personality not so much ahehdhdh). Team, Rocket is INSANE in this one. Also what the hell is with those little baby Nidoqueen. why are they like that. Nidoqueen can't breed, but also even then if they could, how did those things evolve and all get a moon stone so quickly. these babies are f'd up.

8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "The Burned Tower! Matsuba Appears!!" in japanese. The use of the word "subcutaneously" to describe finding things under the ground, like from a metaphorical standpoint it makes sense, but that's just such. an odd choice. Also I love you James
EP182 - From Ghost to Ghost
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Enjū Gym! Ghost Battle!!" in japanese. I did not expect Ash to actually beat this gym in one episode. I really thought it was going to be another 2 part one like usual

EP189 - Freeze Frame
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Freezer VS Purin! In the Middle of a Snowstorm!!" in japanese. I always end up combining this episode with 'snow way out' in my head. Which makes sense given the similar circumstances (mountain and snow). Also Jigglypuff almost killed Team Rocket god damn
EP190 - The Stolen Stones!
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Windie and the Fire Stone!" in japanese. Team Rocket actually almost had that one. Keep using your brain guys maybe you'll get there eventually!!!
EP191 - The Dunsparce Deception
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "There Aren't Any Nokocchi Here!?" in japanese. These kids get it. Dunsparce is epic.
EP192 - The Wayward Wobbuffet

At the beginning of this episode before I even saw Golbat was part of this episode I was literally thinking "hm, I can't remember if Brocks Golbat ever evolved, if it did it would make sense to have it happen in Johto." and then lo and behold. Crobat. I guess my subconscious just remembered this episode better than I thought
EP197 - The Art of Pokemon
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "The Miracle of Doble!! Shining in the Morning Sun!" in japanese. I'm sorry but it's true
EP198 - The Heartbreak of Brock
7/10

EP205 - The Kecleon Caper
6/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Where's Kakureon!? Huge Chaos Created By the Invisible Pokemon!" in japanese. I knew soem hoenn pokemon were introduced in Johto but I completely forgot Kecleon was one of them. Real strange. And also real funny given the fact that it was the first hoenn mon to be shown off in anime, but took AGES to be released in Pokemon GO.
Pikachu Short 10 - Pikachu's PikaBoo Pikachu's PikaBoo
10/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Pikachu's Exciting Hide-and-seek" in japanese. Pikachu and the gang trespass and everyone is okay with it except Larvitar. And the lawnmower, apparently. Who the fuck designed this lawnmower by the way it just pulled out chainsaws!! this looks like something fucking Eggman made. Also kecleon has an unfair advantage In hide and seek
Movie 04 - Pokemon 4Ever - Celebi: The Voice of the Forest
9.5/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Celebi: A Timeless Encounter" in japanese. Reviving my dumb little onion that sent me 40 years in the future and playing with it. I love Sam, and the battle intro for this movie is also awesome. The dark balls are one of the more interesting pokeball designs for sure, next to Mewtwo's created ones In the first movie. For some reason despite really loving this movie, I forgot about quite a lot of it. Likely due to the fact that I don't think my dad burned it onto a disc for me for some reason, so I only saw it when it just happened to play on TV one day. I really do love how much darker the movies can get with their villains and themes. It's obviously all still very child appropriate, but the stakes do feel a lot higher everytime. Rest in peace you fucking onion fairy <3

As an ode to the earlier miltank related episode that was just not available on the site and that we watched a horrible no subs datamoshed japanese version of, we decided to do the EXACT same thing for this one, for fun, because we were joking about Meowth sucking Miltank titties and we realized how close that episode was, and so here we are. It was just as hilarious
EP208 - Fight for the Light!
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Radiance Lighthouse! Battle at Asagi City!!" in japanese. the idea of putting water repellant wax all over an onix is so funny. how much money did that girl just waste. her parents (or jasmine) must be so mad. I mean it worked!!!
EP209 - Machoke, Machoke Man!
6/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Tanba Gym! Wrestling Match!!" in japanese. What is going on with Chuck. What is he doing. Why did his wife insult him like that (I mean she was clearly joking but it was wild). He's got something going on in that weird head.
EP210 - Around the Whirlpool
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "A Chain of Whirlpool Islands! A Renewed Challenge!!" in japanese. Ahhh the start of Master Quest. Professor Elm is definitely a bit gay for Captain Marius. Also I think the idea of "discovering new types" in universe outside of game mechanics is interesting, Like the types would have obviously existed in lore because the Pokemon have, regions can't just manifest. So they would have had to actually notice "wait maybe this Pokemons type isn't what we thought" and study it. Learn the weaknesses and strengths that make it its own. It makes me wonder what the newly introduced Pokemon would have been typed before the discovery. What would Scizor be. Or Steelix. Just plain bug and rock respectively? What about a pokemon like Umbreon that doesn't really fit any other type. Would they have said ghost? It's a fun thought experiment. Sorry I'm being a little insane I just love science and Pokemon and trying to combine them. I may be fucked up.
EP211 - Fly Me to the Moon
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Poppo and the Enormous Poppo! Towards the As Yet Unseen Sky!!" in japanese. That pidgey is insane. godspeed little man. Also I love that Meowths made a bird friend let's go!!
EP212 - Takin' It on the Chinchou

EP214 - Mantine Overboard!
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Mantain and the Sunken Ship!! The Secret of the Mysterious Pokemon!" in japanese. It would be just so funny if a character pulled out a picture of Lugia and talked about the legends and then he's just like "ohhh yeah! I met that :3" and no one believes him
EP215 - Octillery The Outcast

EP218 - Plant It Now... Diglett Later
8/10
(Watched in: English)

Titled "The Legend of Silver Wings! Battle at Gingan Isle!!" in japanese. No way.....mawwiage..... Also Sparky and Richie are back for the next episode baby woohoo!!!!!!
EP220 - The Mystery is History
8.5/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Mysterious Pokemon X!!" in japanese. They actually acknowledge a movie as canon in the anime!!!!! Thank God!!! if only they did this more often. Also, baby Lugia is so cute.....They're so cute I love them
EP221 - A Parent Trapped!
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Captive Lugia!" in japanese. I feel like they got a new artist on the team or something in this episode. or someone was experimenting. Team Rockets faces are much more squishy and round in this episode and they have wide eyes more often. fascinating. great expressions though
EP222 - A Promise is a Promise
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "The Promise with Lugia!" in japanese. Crazy that these last 3 episodes were just a three parter that's basically a small scale version of the movie. Lugia needs saved.... Islands... I love these episodes but why did they do this, did someone just really like Lugia in the writing team
EP223 - Throwing in the Noctowl
7.5/10

EP226 - Espeon, Not Included
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Eifie and Sakura! Enju City Once Again!!" in japanese. Espeon woooo!!!!!!!! I do think it wouldve been cool if Sakura did join the group, but I also understand why not. Also I love Arboks little dance
EP227 - For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll!
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Suicune and Minaki! The Legend of Houou!!" in japanese. Real genius move Eusine. Just throw Alakazam out at the Pokemon that's saved your ass. And you were talking about Suicunes honor earlier too. Use your brain man

8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Famous Detective Junsar! The Mystery of the Egg that Disappeared!!" in japanese. This Jenny has absolutely falsely imprisoned so many people. And also she's certainly gay. Why did you feel the urge to make sure you mentioned Joy was beautiful in the detective case name??? Suspicious.... Good luck Jenny :)
EP230 - Hatching a Plan
7.5/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Egg, Hatch" in japanese. a baby...no way.... (pointing) look at that little beast. Creature....
Special - The Legend of Thunder!
6.5/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Pocket Monsters Crystal: Raikou - Legend of Thunder" in japanese. Definitely a different change of pace from the normal anime. Instead of viewing Ash we are now watching alongside "Jimmy", the male gold/silver protagonist. To start with: shut the fuck up, shut the fuck up. Oh my god Jimmy and Marina I do not care about whatever weird teenage love you got going on. I hate watching it it gives me so much secondhand embarrassment. Watching those two makes me feel the same way Jimmy felt in this special when Marina kept dancing. I'm cringing legitimately.
Anyway once we get past...that. It gets a bit better. I love seeing more rocket members, I like the more serious tone with the villains that they tend to often do with the movies and specials.
I've also decided to come to the conclusion that Eusine has a twin brother, because in this special his name is Eugene for some reason. So it's either that, a fake identity, or a separate universe where the only difference is his name. Typhlosion is also fantastic here I love every single time they're on all fours it's so good. Vincent feels like a fusion between Cilan and Jay from Ninjago.
EP231 - Dues and Don'ts
9/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Rocket-dan and Delibird!" in japanese. I like how this episode dropped us straight into Team Rocket shenanigans already. And that Brocks first response to their stupid idea is that they have enough people to scrimmage. Extremely funny. I am so glad that we get another team rocket centric episode. I don't know what I'd do without hearing Meowth say "If that's the democratic way, I'm voting republican.", one of the funniest things this season. Especially with the fun fact that in the polish dub Meowth says he would go communist apparently. insane. And the existence of a "team jet" and "team helicopter". Sure Jessie may have been joking but I want to believe. Tell me more about team Jet and Helicopter. And I love the petty HR rep over that fruit smoothie. God what a good episode
EP232 - Just Waiting On a Friend
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "The Kyukon in the Fog!" in japanese. Team Rocket ate SO MANY leaves man. Also I think Brock should have got to keep Ninetales. Let them be buddies.
EP233 - A Tyrogue Full of Trouble
5.5/10
(Watched in: English)

EP237 - As Cold as Pryce
0/10

EP238 - Nice Pryce, Baby!
0/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Chōji Gym! Ice Battle!" in japanese. Once again Ash technically doesn't win, but at least he actually battled and also did it really well, so youknow what, fair enough. The Pryce Is Right!
EP239 - Whichever Way the Wind Blows
6/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Kireihana and Ruffresia! Peace in Meadow!" in japanese. "I didn't know Meowth knew what an identity crisis was" Brock i would argue that Meowth is probably the most qualified pokemon to know what that is.
EP240 - Some Like it Hot

anyway I love the anime and how it treats types. it's so funny to me. "yeah Gyarados is a flying type but electric is strong against water!!!" like okay, girl electric is strong against both. Gyarados is quad weak. Pikachu is killing that shit. And he did
EP255 - Why? Wynaut!
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Sohnano!? Gym Badges and Sonans!!" in japanese. I understand Jessie and James. I too cannot resist the urge to finish a phrase when someone else reminds me of it.
Also ash thank you for the gym recap. it is not necessary. I understand you're 10. stop it, please.
Bonus Wynaut moment
EP256 - Just Add Water
4/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Ryūgū Gym! Battle in the Water!" in japanese. sort of died watching this one sorry I am just not really interested in this made up gym out of nowhere. quite literally a filler episode.
Pikachu Short 11 - Camp Pikachu
7/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Pikapika Starry Sky Camp" in japanese. Meowth can never catch a break in these shorts man
Movie 05 - Pokémon Heroes: Latios & Latias
10/10
(Watched in: English + Japanese)
Titled "Guardian Gods of the City of Water: Latias and Latios" in japanese. prepare for disjointed commentary written as I watch because I have no brain right now and won't remember anything by the end of the movie even though I love this movie. One. love the villain girls. they're so fucking cool. two. I love latias in this movie so much. latias is adorable. Ash just got fucking blasted by a grown woman's Espeon. I love that Espeon is called Effie in Japanese by the way, very cute, it's perfect. The sporadic use of CGI is incredibly funny because it's so noticeable, but it's very charming still thanks to the style. It's also incredibly funny that Ash's model keeps kinda flickering or looking off every now and then (at least as far as I am right now writing this) but the villain girls and latias are just, impeccably drawn, love in every frame, I think whoever was animating this just wanted to write their story and ash was an afterthought. But that's sort of what I love about it, I like more worldbuilding type Pokemon movies. Love the portal wall into the garden, was a huge inspiration for me in some of my creative work. I know Pokemon didn't make it up themselves but this was what I saw as a kid that stuck with me. Love the obligatory sinister jingle whenever the flying cameras show up. Also good god the voice actors on latios and latias screaming/crying really went all in here. And I like the small details like latias flying a certain direction while turning invisible and /then/ turning around after already invisible when they're running away. this movie is just so good man I love this movie. I wish Pokemon did movies like this again so much. I do have to wonder though, what the hell is this contraption for. Like this thing just seemed like a bad idea to make from start to finish. But you know what that's the beauty of these movies. We're just doing shit because it's cool. And it fucking is, it's awesome. Also Ash's animation did get better but it's still funny just how high quality the villain girls are. they cannot stop serving. The fossil Pokemon are pretty funny. really a playing god moment, you could probably form any strong Pokemon and you choose to reanimate the extinct. They are absolutely sick though, that kabutops is crazy, I'd be terrified if I was ash he's a braver man than me. Latias uses go go gadget break machine via Bluetooth. I don't know what I'm saying anymore man. I do like that ash walked in and zapped the evil blonde girl with 0 hesitation, good job bud. I keep forgetting their names I'm so sorry I'm a fake fan, I love them but I am stupid. Latios is saved!!! but I know. Not for long. They fucked up the ORB. Good job girls!!! Here comes the scary ride. And alllll the water is leaving. Is anyone still reading this. How do you like my site so far. HERE IT COOOOOMES THE WATER THE WATER IS COMING BACK RAAAAHHHH GO LATIOS GO LATIAS. KILL THE WATER. I feel like this may seem like I'm not taking the movie seriously but truly genuinely I love this movie I've just seen it a bunch and also my ADHD is flaring up. Latios died btw. spoilers btw. but I mean if you're worried about spoilers why are you reading all these awful reviews of mine. Anyway rest in peace Latios you will be remembered!!!!! King!!!! Team Rocket has just been getting fucked with this entire movie btw like they're just. having the worst day ever in this movie seriously. Anyway I think the villains should kiss eachother in the contraption. That's my final message goodbye. Is this movie really 10/10? maybe not, at least compared to non Pokemon movies, but for Pokemon? I would say so
EP257 - Lapras of Luxury
6/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Laplace's Song!" in japanese. it's green ........... fantastic input on the egg thank you misty
EP258 - Hatch Me If You Can
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Protecting the Egg! The Life Born in a Storm!" in japanese. larv-ay-tar..... please... you don't need to enunciate it like that. just say larv-ee-tar quickly like everyone else. save me, save me.
very cute episode though larvitar is adorable in the anime
EP259 - Entei at Your Own Risk
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Entei and Friends of the Hot Spring!" in japanese. Meowth made a "blinded me with science" reference so you know. clearly a banger episode no matter what
EP260 - A Crowning Achievement
6/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Yadoking! King's Symbol!" in japanese. That fucking slowking just pulled some Moses shit the fuck
EP261 - Here's Lookin' at You, Elekid
6/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Nanako and Elekid!" in japanese. I forgot how hellish it is to hear the dub pronunciations of certain Pokemon. why are they saying elekid like that
EP262 - You're a Star, Larvitar!
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Yogiras Does Its Best" in japanese. larvitar is so cute in this episode but I'm gonna explode if I hear them pronounce their name like that any further. I'm dying. it's so jarring Everytime more than any other dub quirk so far
EP263 - Address Unown!
8/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Unknown of the Country of Mystery!" in japanese. I love Ash's awful memory. You've seen Unown man....please ... get this boy some glasses he clearly can't see. Anyway yayyy larvitar yayyy. I like this episode too. unnerved me as a kid but I really like it
EP264 - Mother of All Battles
8.5/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Bangiras and Yogiras!" in japanese. this episode is way funnier than it has any right to be. there's just so much dumb shit happening all the time. you wouldn't think the premise here would be so goofy everywhere but it is. Also finally we're free from hearing "larv-ay-tar" repeatedly
EP265 - Pop Goes The Sneasel
6/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Nyula and the Sacred Flame!" in japanese. I think I have a curse when it comes to 'first Pokemon episode of the night' where no matter what my ADHD gets me. sneasel was there??? they tried to replace Meowth but they grabbed Meowth and not the sneasel. something about the silver torch. Machop and machine guard it now??? Idfk I remember bits and pieces
EP266 - A Claim to Flame!
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Shirogane League Opening! Shigeru Again!" in japanese. I do like seeing Gary and Ash become more friendly with each other overtime. It's very cute. They're fun rivals, it's a shame we don't get to see Gary super often really after Kanto/Johto
EP267 - Love, Pokémon Style
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "League Preliminaries! Battle of the Magmarashi Flame!!" in japanese. I really love whenever the anime remembers to utilize swapping more often. I think the swap between Pokemon multiple times during this battle is great. Also funny that this is one of those few episodes where Misty actually sounds jealous about other girls around Ash. I don't care for Ash romance really but it is very funny. Also James and his stupid bottle caps. I love him
EP268 - Tie One On!
5/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Meganium VS Fushigidane! Spirit of the Grass Types!" in japanese. Shiny magneton moment yayyy wooo
EP269 - The Ties That Bind
6/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Tournament Finals! Full Battle 6 VS 6!!" in japanese. I have the strangest Mandela effect with this episode. I truly think I am the only person out there with it. For whatever reason, I VIVIDLY remember that the referee announces both Ash and Gary as 11 year olds. On rewatch, they don't state ages at all. Am I stupid? Did it really happen and I just have the wrong ash and Gary battle? I don't know. But I hate it. because I swear to you I know I heard them say it. I remember they announced it as if Ash had just recently turned 11. I think I'm an idiot maybe. But it's never left my head
EP270 - Can't Beat the Heat!
9/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Rival Confrontation! Kamex VS Lizardon!!" in japanese. I do love this battle. it's fun to see Gary adjust his strategy through being inspired by Ash. Not afraid to admit when Ash did well but also entirely willing to use it against him. Also professor oak man. please. "golem is the heaviest Pokemon second only to Snorlax!" steelix exists man. come on. you call yourself a professor? Anyway, the actually serious battles are so fun. I love seeing the weird strategies Ash comes up with when he's losing. He absolutely earned this win for sure
EP271 - Playing with Fire!
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Bursyamo Returns! Battle Against Hazuki!!" in japanese. Imagine telling your fucking chameleon to mow the grass with its tongue. that's crazy. What was this guy cooking.
EP272 - Johto Photo Finish
7/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "To the End of the Full Battle! Each One's Way!!" in japanese. Skill issue on Ash's part. I could've beaten Harrison at age 10 with my Pokemon. Say goodbye to your champion cup yet again Boy. Also I forgot that this was how they wrote Gary off. literally just "yeah you know what I think I'm gonna go become my grandpa. Bye!" and then just walks off into the distance. Thanks man
EP273 - Gotta Catch Ya Later!
10/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Goodbye...and Then, Setting Off!" in japanese. Very nice semifinale for Johto, I like how they tie stuff up with Misty in preparation for the next season, it's very sweet. Also Team Rocket really just tried to pay children to help them steal Pokemon. Wild! Also Ash climbing out of a pit with a fork and a spoon is crazy, seeing him flashback to "with matching cutlery~" from Brock made me laugh. I do love the emotions portrayed in this episode but sometimes it really reminds you that yes, this is for kids, and it hits you with the most unintentionally funny thing ever
EP274 - Hoenn Alone!
9/10
(Watched in: English)
Titled "Parting with Pikachu...!" in japanese. MEOWTH AND PIKACHU EPISODE WOOOO I love getting more Pokemon centric scenes with Meowth involved. I love getting the glimpse into the Pokemon's personalities through Meowth's translating. It is very funny too though, it's particularly noticeable in this episode but this translating makes his sentences feel way more long winded as compared to his usual scenes because they have to make him repeat what the Pokemon said in full. It makes him sound like he is just truly utterly bewildered at what everyone says even when it's the most normal sentence in the world. I also really like how Team Rocket does actually feel a bit more threatening when Brock and Misty aren't around, they outnumber Ash easily when all he has is Pikachu. But with that, Johto is over! Very fun episode to have ended on. Into the Hoenn region we go as Pikachu suddenly falls ill! ooo cliffhanger~
AG001 - Get the Show on the Road!
8.5/10
(Watched in: (English + Japanese)
Titled "A New Land! A New Adventure!!" in japanese. As much as I loved the anime up until Kalos when I was kid, I honestly don't remember much character development-wise about anything after Johto. I remember some sporadic episode plots, but, for example in this episode, I did not remember that May actually didn't like Pokemon at first! But also, it's worth noting that finally we've gotten to a part in the show with subtitles again, so perhaps its different in Japanese? I don't remember, so I can't say! It'll be fun though, rediscovering the show like this when I genuinely don't remember much. So welcome to Hoenn everybody! Jessie is having an existential crisis, Pikachu exploded a machine, and mudkip is here baby!!!! May is just, failing at everything, sort of taking the role that Ash had at the start of the indigo league, being a huge newbie to Pokemon training. This is a wild first plot by the way, like the stakes are straight up "if we don't get this electricity out of Pikachu he is going to BLOW SHIT UP and EXPLODE" like What!!! We just got here god damn!!! I get the narrative purpose, it allows Ash and May to meet and bond, but wow is it just immediate. Meowth is so snarky this episode and it's awesome, while Jessie is suddenly on Pikachu's side here. May's bike has now been destroyed too, RIP but you will never be Misty's bike. Also the iconic "is that a water type?" at treecko. God Ash you're so smart. How does he do it. May is so silly too.
AG002 - A Ruin with a View
6/10
(Watched in: (English + Japanese)
Titled "Ancient Pokémon and Mysterious Teams!" in japanese. I love how willing everyone in the world is to let Ash, a 10 year old, just go and mess with grown ass criminals. Why are you letting this child be a vigilante. Why do the Houndoom have armor. Incredibly funny. Also this guy studying the ruins literally looks like whitewashed Brock with a ponytail.
WPBS Side Story 1 - A Family That Battles Together Stays Together!
8.5/10
(Watched in: (English)
Titled "Takeshi! Save Nibi Gym!" in japanese. "how did he do that??" Brock your dad should probably be checked for memory issues. how does he not remember helping Ash with his Pikachu. Anyway this special is very silly, I do like it. Just some silly fun antics with Brock's family as he watches his parents reconnect their marriage on the side. One glimpse into Brock's bizarre family and everything about him makes sense.
AG003 - There's no Place Like Hoenn
7/10
(Watched in: (English + Japanese)
Titled "Touka Gym! VS Yarukimono!" in japanese. Watched this in subs as we have been for those with them but we paused to check the dub because I was very curious how they did the mushroom/ember pun in English. They don't. or at least, not involving mushrooms. Instead of Kinoko and Hinoko it's Amber and Ember. But because of the animation, it just means there's a floating mushroom in the background for no reason. Incredibly funny. Anyway god I know Max is just a small child but please. I need him to stop talking. Just. shhhhhhh.....
WPBS Side Story 2 - Cerulean Blues
6/10
(Watched in: (English)
Titled "Revenge Match at Hanada Gym" in japanese. Less interested in this Misty special than the Brock one, but it has some funny moments. Like how on earth is Misty talking underwater without one of the breathing devices we've seen before in the show. No wonder she had that weird dream, how much fucking water did she swallow?? Also those weird ass 3 kids from the end of Johto are back. Mr annoying, Mr. tall, and Mr wide as fuck. Seriously why that kid so wide please squish him back
AG004 - You Never Can Taillow
7/10
(Watched in: (English + Japanese)
Titled "A Lot of Subame! A Lot of Danger! Capture in Touka Woods!!" in japanese. Brock is back baby!!! Woo!!!! Anyway taillows are insane man. What are these birds doing. That fucking bird that I hate. Anyway Ash has caught a fucking bird. So now it's the bird that he loves. Chocolate eating bastard bird. Idk what I'm saying I honestly ran out of meaningful commentary for these sorts of exposition and/or filler episodes long ago. As of writing this, January 29th 12:20 AM, I have basically just turned this into a Pokemon shitposting diary. And not even good shitposts. I'm just dicking around now as I have fun watching pokemon
WPBS Side Story 3 - We're No Angels!
9/10
(Watched in: (English)
Titled "Persevere! Look Forward, Rocket-dan" in japanese. FANTASTIC cold opening. Asking for angels to help and team rocket crash landing. That's so good. maybe I'm just giggly from earlier today but it killed me. And it is just so fun to have a little 'episode' FULLY focused on team rocket, no Ash involved. I love these little side stories. Ash is a fun protagonist but I do love when there's more stories that don't involve him, especially if it's team rocket. I really love team rocket okay. But for real this episode is so funny, Team Rocket trying to play hero to take advantage of a village's mistake. The weird ass scientist. I love him he's so funny.
AG005 - In the Knicker of Time!
8/10
(Watched in: (English + Japanese)
Titled "Jiguzaguma and the Short-pantsed Boy! Haruka's First Battle!!" in japanese. Team Rocket gets brutally pwned by some random Furry child who loves shorts. Truly a low point for them
AG006 - A Poached Ego!
10/10
(Watched in: (English + Japanese)
Titled "Rocket-dan! A Fury Swipes Goodbye!!" in japanese. They should've let Jessie and James have an army of ekans and koffing. it'd be funny. Anyways! The introduction of James' newest Pokemon that likes to injure him; Cacnea! Definitely no Victribell, but still iconic. I love when Team Rocket episodes acknowledge how they get fucked over so often by Ash and the rest. Meowth being able to withstand the electricity out of sheer will to rescue the ekans and koffing because "Pikachu zaps worse than this" is actually incredible, super fun. Ive said it before and I'll say it again, I love Team Rocket episodes!!!!! I love when they get more characterizations! Goodbye Arbok and Weezing, you guys were real ones. I love the looks into Team Rocket where despite their jobs, they do genuinely care about the Pokemon they do take along with them and journey beside. Doing the right thing just for their Pokemon's sake. I like that despite always being villains, we get to see Team Rocket be influenced by Ash and the rest's presence in their life over time. Awesome episode
AG007 - Tree's a Crowd
8/10
(Watched in: (English + Japanese)
Titled "Forest of Kimori! Protect the Gigantic Tree!!" in japanese. Enter Treecko! I love the episodes where the cast get new Pokemon by befriending them rather than traditional capture, it really shows trainers having that bond with their Pokemon even from the very start of their journey together. It makes our cast's wins all the more exciting, and their losses all the more tragic. It's a great layer of investment for anybody watching. Ash helping this wild Treecko to try and save the tree where it makes its home from withering away, very cute scene.
WPBS Side Story 4 - Showdown at the Oak Corral
7/10
(Watched in: (English)
Titled "Huge Battle at Okido Residence!!" in japanese. Fun little episode with Butch and Cassidy stealing from Professor Oak. Butch's English voice jumpscares me every time, motherfucker who smokes 6 packs a day type voice. I don't have a whole lot to say about this episode besides that it was fun.
AG008 - A Tail with a Twist
8/10
(Watched in: (English + Japanese)
Titled "Habunake VS Kimori ! The Strike Offensive of Certain Kills!!" in japanese. In love with the fact that Jessie got so mad over her hair that she beat up a giant snake all by herself and then upon capturing the Seviper her hair magically grew back. Jessie is just built different man I swear. Anyway welcome Seviper!!! Alas we will not be seeing it since were watching in Japanese, but I still remember that insane 'whos that pokemon' in the English version that just straight up lies and says Arbok evolves into Seviper. insane how that happened, who approved that.
AG009 - Taming of the Shroomish
7/10
(Watched in: (English + Japanese)
Titled "Bizarre! Mystery of the Kinococo Mansion!?" in japanese. Funny little shrooms.... look at them go. Anyway GOD they went overkill on team rocket here, paralyzed, leech seed, the usual shocks. Good Lord man those little mushrooms were out for their blood.
AG010 - You Said a Mouthful!
7/10
(Watched in: (English + Japanese)
Titled "The Greatest Pelipper Show in History!!" in japanese. Dude is hacking in real life. I mean I know he was just using other Pokemon inside of a pelipper but could you imagine this happening to you. You fight some random guy and his pelipper just electrocutes your Pokemon? I would let him say he earned that win just based on the creativity of this man's mind honestly. Also Meowth ratatouille's the pelipper. Just beautiful truly
AG011 - A Bite to Remember
6/10
(Watched in: (English + Japanese)
Titled "Graena and Pochiena ! Mystery of Evolution!!" in japanese. Max harasses a dog: the episode. The dog is chill with it tho so it's all cool. Anyway god what was team rocket doing here. those costumes man. I know you're always low on cash but come on, if you can afford your fancy ass costumes let Meowth have some actually good ones. Team Rocket needs to master fursuiting to enhance their skills
AG012 - The Lotad Lowdown
5/10
(Watched in: (English + Japanese)
Titled "Hassboh and the Three Sisters of the Flower Shop!" in japanese. The nefarious lotad ..... I have basically no thoughts on this episode as a whole tbh. I chuckled a few times. it's fine. just fine. But anyway yayyy lotad joins brock
AG013 - All Things Bright and Beautifly!
7/10
(Watched in: (English + Japanese)
Titled "Pokémon Contest! Agehunt 's Magnificent Battle!!" in japanese. Ahhh yes. The episode where Pikachu learns iron tail and then NEVER stops using it. I mean I'm glad for the variety beyond quick attack and thunder/thunderbolt. but god. I almost associate Pikachu more with iron tail than any other move. I do love getting more scenes where Pokemon actually train a move instead of just figuring it out suddenly. Anyway, the intro to contests is also fun! I've always liked the contests in the anime. I think it's a little less fun that usually it's only the girls focusing on it, but it's still fun to have something other than the gym battles exclusively.
WPBS Side Story 5 - The Blue Badge of Courage
6/10
(Watched in: (English)
Titled "Kasumi! Get the Blue Badge!!" in japanese. "I was doing my morning tree hopping" sir you are an old man with a job in making badges. why are you hopping through the trees like an animal. You're insane.
AG014 - All in a Day's Wurmple
7.5/10
(Watched in: (English)
Titled "Double Battle and Double Kemusso !?" in japanese. What insane twins name themselves the same name. Franklin and Franklin??? And their only difference is moles on opposite cheeks and wearing different colored undershirts? why would you do that to yourself. Why would you introduce yourself as Franklin and not your first names. I assume this is because of a Japanese translation thing but what. Also Meowth calls James a 'big boy' in the strangest way near the beginning of this episode. Why did. Why did he do that
WPBS Side Story 6 - Of Meowth and Pokémon (Part 1)
9/10
(Watched in: (English)
Titled "The Millennium Town Meetup" in japanese. Meowth harasses a bunch of children instead of just saying Smoochum grabbed the wrong basket
WPBS Side Story 7 - Of Meowth and Pokémon (Part 2)
9/10
(Watched in: (English)
Titled "Nyarth with a Part-Time Job!?" in japanese. Meowth employs child labor in order to try and build a statue of himself. What a true capitalist
Pokemon Chronicles - Trouble in Big Town
7/10
(Watched in: (English)
Titled "We are the Pichu Brothers - Balloon Disturbance" in japanese. There are absolutely NO thoughts inside of that woopers head
WPBS Side Story 9 - Big Meowth, Little Dreams (Part 1)
9/10
(Watched in: (English)
Titled "Calling on Mysterious Detective Nyarth!" in japanese. So many good Meowth faces. Also give this guy a break let him eat his sandwich!!! At least he got to join the dinner at the end
WPBS Side Story 10 - Big Meowth, Little Dreams (Part 2)
8/10
(Watched in: (English)
Titled "Ruriri the Niece is a Great Nuisance?" in japanese. Azurill. Man. Please. You're ruining Meowth's vibe man, let him have this!!!!

AG019 - Sharpedo Attack!
0/10
(Watched in: (English + Japanese)
Titled "Escape! Samehader Island!!" in japanese.
WPBS Side Story 8 - Oaknapped!
0/10
(Watched in: (English)
Titled "A Pokémon Dragnet! Search for Dr. Okido!!" in japanese. Yes, that says 8, and no, skipping 8 earlier was not accidental, if youre someone who noticed. As mentioned, this is going to be in as much of chronological order as possible, but not necessarily by release date, but rather story-wise. We have a list we're going off of, and this is the first time where it seems explicitly 'out of order', so I found it worth noting. Regardless, into the episode!
AG020 - Brave the Wave

Titled "Muro Gym! Enter Touki the Surfing Gym Leader!" in japanese.

Iconic, need to get back into it if possible sometime soon. I still love when it was first released and everyone on earth was playing it, wish we could get that craze back again.

PICROSS

Hated the microtransactions because I was a horrible child who would spend way too much of my parents money and I feel bad for it, but this game did get me into Picross, so thats fucking awesome.

ART ACADEMY

(Played Mid 2010s)
Had a lot of fun with it! It wouldve been super cool to have had it when I was little, since by the time I played I was already pretty decent with my drawing skills and was just doing it for fun. But it was still super cool!

I enjoyed it a lot! The only thing stopping it from a higher score is the fact that it still feels unfinished. I seriously think that the pokemon team needs more time for these games. The consistent release times may have worked for the 2D games, but it will not last at this rate for the 3D games. I would prefer waiting longer for a fully polished game than waiting shorter for a lower quality one. I really think Pokemon should make use of sidegames to give themselves more time. I miss full but not mainline games like PMD or Ranger, I think outsourcing some sidegames to other companies to fill the space between mainline games would be beneficial. I truly think pokemon could make something great if they just allowed themself some room to breathe. But otherwise, I love the story concept, I like the region's theme and gimmicks, but they just needed some more polish.
